Technical audit: the local crawl that scores each site

The crawler runs on your workstation and goes through the site without sending anything outside; from it, it produces a report scored out of 100, with the detail of the issues found page after page. At each new pass, the score is recalculated, which lets you observe its evolution. This same crawl serves as the foundation for the rest of the dashboard: clusters, linking, fixes and indexation all follow from it.

The reading

What the crawl reports

A full pass of the site on your machine, which produces a score and the detail of the issues page after page.

  • The technical side: status codes, redirects, canonicals and indexability.
  • The editorial side: titles, Hn structure, duplicate content and linking.
  • A score out of 100 at each crawl, whose trend you read across the passes.
  • A dedicated crawl per client site, with a limit of 500 URLs on the free plan.

The technical SEO audit in SEO Cartograph

A technical SEO audit puts the site under scrutiny to spot what blocks its SEO before the question of content even comes up. SEO Cartograph’s crawler runs on your workstation and goes through all the pages without sending anything outside. From it, it produces a report scored out of 100, with the detail of the issues found page after page. At each new pass, the score is recalculated, which lets you observe its evolution over time.

The technical side and the editorial side

The crawl reports two families of signals. On the technical side, it checks the status codes, the redirects, the canonicals and the indexability of each URL. On the editorial side, it checks the titles, the Hn structure, the duplicate content and the internal linking. The two sides are read in the same report, which makes arbitration simpler when a site accumulates issues of a different nature.

A single score does not tell the whole story

A technical SEO audit scored 92 out of 100 can hide a specific problem that weighs heavily on a handful of strategic pages, buried in an otherwise favourable average. Conversely, a score that drops a few points after a crawl does not necessarily signal an overall regression: it can come from new pages added to the site, still incomplete, that pull the average down while they get finished. The figure alone, at a given moment, lends itself to this kind of misleading reading. Tracked crawl after crawl, as in the table above going from 74 to 83 then to 92, the score becomes a curve: you see whether the site is progressing over time, whether a project has paid off, or whether a regression holds up across several passes before you draw a conclusion. It is this reading over time that makes the technical audit useful for steering, more than the day’s score.

A local crawl, foundation of the rest of the dashboard

The crawl runs locally, with a dedicated pass per client site and a limit of 500 URLs on the free plan. This same crawl serves as the foundation for the rest of the dashboard: the clusters, the linking, the on-page fixes and the indexation all follow from it. To go further, see the SEO Cartograph dashboard, the on-page fixes or the internal linking.

  • The technical SEO audit score makes sense in the trend, crawl after crawl.
  • A one-off drop in the score can simply come from new, incomplete pages.
  • The technical side and the editorial side are read in the same report.
  • Every new crawl recalculates the score and feeds the evolution curve.
