The checklist

What an on-page audit covers

Eight families of checks, all verifiable on the page itself, with no server access and no Search Console.

Meta tags

Title and meta description

The title is still the most decisive on-page element: unique, carrying the topic, not truncated. Google cuts by pixel width, not by character count. A title in capitals gets cut far sooner.

Structure

Heading hierarchy

A single H1 that echoes the topic. H2s that genuinely divide the text, with no skipped levels. The Hn structure reads like the page outline: if it makes no sense on its own, neither does the content.

Content

Depth and topic coverage

Word count, reading time, text-to-code ratio, and whether the key terms appear in the title, the H1 and the introduction. A long text that never uses the words of the query does not answer it.

Images

Alt, weight, dimensions

Missing alt attributes, real file weights and declared dimensions. Images are the leading cause of slowness and the leading source of lost accessibility.

Indexability

Robots, canonical, hreflang

Is the page indexable? A forgotten noindex, a canonical pointing elsewhere, an inconsistent hreflang: three silent ways to keep a page out of the results.

Structured data

JSON-LD

The declared types, their validity and how well they match the actual content. A malformed schema breaks nothing, but it earns nothing either.

Performance

Core Web Vitals

LCP, CLS, FCP and TTFB measured on load. Useful to tell a genuinely slow page apart from one that only feels slow because of a single element shifting the layout.

Links

Internal, external, broken

What the page links to and where. Broken links show up here, with the detail on the dedicated broken links page.

Method

Audit a page in three moves

1

Open the page and the panel

On your own site, a client’s or a competitor’s. The audit covers the page as actually rendered, the way a visitor sees it.

2

Read the diagnosis, sorted by severity

Issues come sorted by importance, with no invented overall score. A score out of 100 does not tell you what to fix first; a prioritised list does.

3

Export and fix

The report copies as Markdown, ready to paste into a ticket or an email. The Hn structure copies in one click too, which gives you an instant writing brief.

One page, or the whole site?

An on-page audit answers page by page. For problems that only show at site level (orphan pages, depth, duplication, sitemap), you need a crawl.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is an on-page audit?
It is the examination of everything that can be judged on the page itself: meta tags, heading structure, content, images, indexability, structured data, performance and links. It stands opposite the off-page audit and complements the technical audit, which plays out at site level.
How do I audit a page for free?
With the Chrome extension SEO Cartograph On-page: open the page, open the side panel, the diagnosis appears. Free and no sign-up.
What is the right length for a title?
There is no official character count: Google truncates by pixel width, around 580 px on desktop. In practice 55 to 60 characters fit, but a title in capitals gets cut sooner. Hence measuring in pixels, which is more reliable.
Do you really need a single H1 per page?
Multiple H1s carry no penalty, Google handles them fine. But a single H1 remains the sound practice: it forces you to decide what the page is about and keeps the hierarchy readable.
How does it differ from a technical audit?
An on-page audit looks at one page. A technical audit looks at the site: depth, orphan pages, sitemap, duplication, redirects. The two complement each other.
