Multi-client position tracking: real SERP and GSC position

Every morning at 6:15, Cartograph queries the real SERP of your keywords, in each one’s own locale. The day’s position is set against the Search Console average position, which serves as a reference over time. Each keyword corresponds to a client project and the page that ranks in the results.

The reading

What Cartograph measures each day

A daily reading that crosses the real SERP and your Search Console data, client project by client project.

  • The real SERP of the day, taken in the locale of each keyword (beyond 10 = outside the top 10).
  • The comparison with the Search Console average position, as a historical reference.
  • The competitors present on the query, along with the page of your site that ranks.
  • Optionally, the Keyword Planner search volumes, provided through DataForSEO.

SEO position tracking in SEO Cartograph

Tracking your positions in Google remains the basis of managed SEO. A keyword that gains three places or slips to the second page directly changes a page’s traffic. SEO Cartograph’s position tracking records each morning the real SERP of your keywords, in the right locale, and sets that figure against the average position reported by Search Console.

Real SERP and Search Console position

The day’s SERP gives a precise snapshot, but it moves from one day to the next. The Search Console average position, for its part, smooths the trend over time. By showing them side by side, you distinguish the underlying movement from the daily noise, and you know which pages deserve a push.

Reading a gap between the two figures

A Search Console average position of 6 with today’s SERP at 3 does not tell the same story as an average position of 3 with today’s SERP at 6. In the first case, the keyword is improving and the average has not yet caught up with the last few days: it smooths out over several weeks of data. In the second, today’s SERP may be picking up a recent drop, or just a one-off shift in ranking: a competitor testing a new title, a news event that temporarily shakes up the results. Before concluding there is a real loss of position in position tracking, it is better to wait for two or three consecutive readings pointing the same way. A single day’s gap tells you little. A trend that holds up over a week, on the other hand, is worth a closer look at the page in question.

Built for agencies and multi-client work

Each keyword is tied to a client project and to the page that ranks, which keeps tracking readable even with many accounts. Agencies find a space per client, and freelancers a clear overview of their own queries. To go further, see the SEO Cartograph dashboard, the for agencies space or the clusters and share of voice.

  • The day’s real SERP and the Search Console average position complement each other.
  • A daily reading per keyword, in each project’s own locale.
  • Position tracking tells apart the underlying trend from one-off noise.
  • Each keyword stays tied to its client project and its page.
